Are you thinking of extending your Wifi at home or in the office? Wifi extenders are not always the best option.

Your new fibre connection is installed at home and Wifi is up and running in the Study or Living room, happy with your new internet and as soon as you climb into bed and browse your favourite news articles for the day you realize your internet is dead slow.

Now, what now?

The next day you do a quick Google and bam your answer is a Wifi Extender or Booster.

You hop onto your favourite online shop and purchase one of these devices before asking yourself the following questions:

  • Will a Wifi Extender/Booster reach my room effectively?
  • Will i be getting a decent internet speed?
  • Are there other alternatives to a Wifi Extenders or Boosters that might be better?
  • Is a Wifi Extender/booster a cheaper option?

Now let’s answer the above questions one by one.

  • Will a Wifi Extender/Booster reach my room effectively?

This is a tricky question, a site survey will determine the answer. But there are various factors that need to be taken into account. Extenders and Boosters do not do very well through concrete floors or walls. A bedroom upstairs will almost certainly have a degraded signal.

  • Will i be getting a decent internet speed?

Its a know fact that while using your Extender or Booster your signal degrades by at least 60%. We are trying to gain speed not lose it along the way.

  • Are there other alternatives to a Wifi Extenders or Boosters that might be better?

Yes, there is, the most effective way to extend your coverage in your home or business is to lay a cable and put up another access point. This approach gives you excellent signal and speeds and allows you to configure your network in such a way that when you move through the house or office your devices will roam between these points at ease.

  • Is a Wifi Extender/booster a cheaper option?

Again a tricky question. You get really cheap extenders nowadays. The cabled route/Access Point is a cheaper option because it’s stable and works first round whereas an extender might not perform as well as intended.

Our Summary

Not only is it cheaper to go the network cable and access point route but it’s also much more reliable and flexible. Going this route by installing an Access Point in another location in your house also gives you the opportunity to connect a cable from the Access Point for example, directly into your TV which means steaming will be a lot more stable.
